Selling Luxury Yachts - Is It Lucrative?
By Vanessa A. Doctor

Unknown to the spotlight of political, fashion, food and entertainment industry, the luxury yacht industry have grown tremendously in its own silent realm.

Back in 1993, there had only been 700 boats sized over 24 meters, now an estimate of 7000 yachts over 24 meters are reported to be in use. It is currently a $25 billion international industry with an annual growth of 5-10%.

Certain events like the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center, stock market crashes, threats of SARS, and dollar devaluation, had completely no effect on this market segment. The business has grown steadily for the past years despite of the economical crises that have been hitting investors and still marketing experts forecast that it would still continue to.

A few reasons of the increasing trend in luxury yacht ownership and chartering would be due to the immense benefits the client gets in it. Foremost, people in off-shore residency could live tax-free in the comforts of their yachts. It is also one way to spend retirements, not by feeling old in closed doors but rather young and adventurous. And for the multimillionaires, it tops their list of most popular and expensive activity they spend their excesses on.

In selling a yacht, the most efficient, easiest and safest way is by taking the first step of finding a broker. Brokers with multiple listing connections would be highly regarded. Finding one that specializes on luxury yachts would be of advantage too. Brokerage pages usually found in Marine magazines is one place to start off.

After finding the right broker, setting the price is the next crucial step to make. You must take caution with it because this highly determines how fast or slow you are going to sell. It is wise to study how prices are going for the market you are aiming for and the broker's fees should be considered too.

Setting prices sky high could be a disadvantage if you really want to sell in pronto, while inverse would be opportunity lost for you. Flexibility in negotiating is the key for you to maximize the deal both in favor for you and your client. After you have set the price, your yacht is laid out in the market and comes face to face with its perspective buyers.

Just as in buying a car, clients would evaluate by looking at beauty and the mechanical work of the machine. Especially, since luxury yachts are like a second home to its owners, the looks, style, and furnishings should be appealing to the buyer. Since first impressions lasts, when prospects inspect your yacht make sure that everything is clean, polished and bright as a gem as you tour them around. Know the mechanical and technical condition and make sure it is in top shape. Showing off the facilities, special gadgets, and tricks your yacht does will definitely add on to its appeal.

Thus, by being knowledgeable on what you are selling, up to date on the trends and connected to the right people, getting into the growing business of selling luxury yachts would definitely be lucrative for you.
